People want to make healthier food choices these days, so food manufacturing companies are trying to appease to the market by putting a “healthy” spin on their products. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always mean they are healthy. Companies will add things such as “made with real fruit” and “multi-grain” to their products as just another way to dress up refined flour and sugar. Don’t fall for it! Here are some labels for you to watch out for the next time you are at the store and looking to buy a product that is a bit more healthy.

Yogurt-Covered

yogurt

Keep in mind, few yogurts today are even a health win because of all the added sugars, she added. It’s likely that even if the product is made with yogurt powder, it contains no calcium and only a negligible amount of protein.

Made with Real Fruit

fruit

This can mean any number of things, including that a food is made with fruit puree (often a lower-cost fruit such as apple, pear, or grape) or sweetened with fruit juices. But it doesn’t necessarily mean it contains the vitamins or fiber you’d find in actual fruits, Companies are selling fruit juice or puree, plus a lot of sugar.

Multigrain

multigrain

“Multigrain” indicates, literally, that multiple grains were used in the product (there are other common labels that indicate the same thing, like “seven-grain”). But it does not necessarily mean whole grains. In fact, the multiple grains in the product may all be refined and stripped of their natural nutrients and fiber.

Whole Grain

whole grains

While whole grains are a good place to start, a food “made with whole grains” may actually contain mostly refined flour, supplemented by a small amount of whole grain flour — one trick is to check which appears first on the ingredients list. The most honest labels are the ones that disclose the percentage of whole gains used.

With so many food companies trying to compete in this new healthy industry, it can be kind of hard to make sure you are truly getting something healthy. So be sure to always read the label and nutritional information and use your best judgment! You know your body better than anyone else.

First off, what exactly is a superfood? While this isn’t a real term in general superfoods are nutrient powerhouses that pack large doses of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Eating them may reduce the risk of chronic disease, and prolong life, and people who eat more of them are healthier and thinner than those who don’t.

You should try to incorporate these foods into your daily diet everyday. Today I’m going to talk about one of my personal favorite breakfast staples: Oats!

Why they’re super: Full of fiber, oats are a rich source of magnesium, potassium, and phytonutrients. They contain a special type of fiber that helps to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease. Magnesium works to regulate blood-sugar levels, and research suggests that eating whole-grain oats may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Oats can be utilized in many different ways and are good at any meal. So the next time you’re at the store, consider picking up this wonderful ingredient!

Eating too much sugar is associated with high risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. But again, it’s delicious. So how do you know if you’re eating too much sugar? Well if you’re exercising regularly and eating healthy, then having a couple of cookies here and there won’t hurt you. The American Heart Association recommends limiting your daily added sugar intake to 6-9 teaspoons a day. To give you a comparison there are about 10 teaspoons of added sugar in one 12 ounce can of soda! So if you’re downing 3 sodas a day or eating a package of cookies in one sitting then maybe you want to start thinking about limiting your sugar intake, and here are some ways in which you can!

1. Have a reasonable amount of the thing you crave on a regular basis and savor it. When you binge on foods you’ve been craving, people tend to enjoy the letting go part rather than what they’re actually eating which tends to make them eat more in order to relish the taste.

2. Train yourself not to stress eat by practicing being around tempting foods when you’re relaxed. Let’s face it, a lot of us eat sugary foods when we’re stressed, sad, or emotional. By being around foods that tempt us in times of relaxation we can better learn to control our cravings.

3. Probably don’t go cold turkey or eliminate carbs. This is probably the worst thing you can do. Eliminating food groups all together tends to make us depressed and binge eat even more. Gradually cut back on these foods and remember: it’s okay to have in moderation.

4. Don’t look to artificial sweeteners to address your cravings. Artificial sweeteners are actually worse for you than the real deal (and doesn’t taste as good).

5. Be wary of relying on “healthy versions” of sweets. This is an awesome alternative to some of your favorite desserts but be careful; sometimes we tend to talk ourselves into having that slice of pizza because we ate a healthier muffin earlier.

Remember, not everyone has to limit their sugar intake so look at your lifestyle and decide what’s best for you. Maybe try one or two of these tips to begin with and go from there.
