Who doesn’t love yummy food, and most of what makes that food delicious is all that salt, sugar, and fat. Things that we should have in moderation but it’s not always easy to cut these out of diet. Here are some tips on how you can limit the amount of salt, sugar, and fat in your diet naturally and still enjoy delicious food.

Marinate

Mix spices and herbs with fresh citrus juice, vinegar or wine. Coat food thoroughly and refrigerate for an hour before cooking.

Purees

Add creaminess to your food with purees. Unsweetened applesauce, pumpkin purée or squash purée can sub for oil, eggs or sugar in some recipes for baked goods. Silken tofu purée stands in for dairy in dressings and dips. Soaked and puréed cashews add richness to soups and sauces.

Steam-Fry

Get your pan sizzling hot before adding chopped onions and other vegetables. When they begin to stick, stir in a splash of water or reduced-sodium broth.

Balance it all with Brightness!

Instead of adding salt to elevate flavors, finish with:

  • A splash of vinegar
  • A squeeze of citrus juice
  • A handful of chopped herbs

Engage the Senses with Herbs and Spices

  • Garlic adds rich, savory flavor
  • Aromatic herbs help build your flavor foundation
  • Chiles and chile powder stimulate the palate
  • Cinnamon heightens sweet flavors

Anyone who lives in Austin or has visited will quickly agree that it is the best city in the entire world. Period. There are so many great things to do, see, and EAT in this fabulous city that truly getting the opportunity to live here is both a blessing a curse. I’ve compiled a list of eleven reasons why living in Austin ruins you for life but in the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson: “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.”

11 Reasons Living in Austin Ruins you for Life

1.  Because few places are better to spend a lovely afternoon than atop Mount Bonnell.

1

2. And you don’t have to travel too far to experience the breathtaking beauty that is Hamilton Pool.

2

3.  Because its food trailers are in a league of their own.

3

4. Because the music festivals it hosts are top-notch.

4

5. Because the Tex-Mex food is nothing short of spectacular.

5

6. And the BBQ is world-class.

6

7. It’s a place where sunset means being able to witness one of nature’s greatest phenomena.

7

8. Because Zilker Park is THE place to be.

8

9.  Because it’s a city that stays true to its roots, and its rich history.

9

10. Because it’s a city where creativity can literally be found anywhere.

10

11. And most important of all, once you live there, you’ll realize heaven isn’t too far away.

For those of you curious about the history of Leander, here is a little history:

“The City of Leander, originally called Bagdad, was established on July 17, 1882. The first settlers arrived in the area around 1845, receiving bounty land grants in exchange for service in the Texas Revolution. These settlers lived in log cabins and were frequently subjected to being attacked by Indians that also called this area of central  Texas their home. Because of these frequent attacks, the Texas Rangers were called in to protect the settlers and they constructed a building that would house up to sixty men. This was one of the first buildings of what is now Williamson County.”[1]

“Leander, presently, has a population estimated at over 30,000. The Leander Independent School District has grown into the largest school district in Williamson Countyand the fastest growing district in the state of Texas. It presently has a total of four high schools, six middle schools and twenty-one elementary schools. It encompasses the cities of Leander, CedarPark, Jonestown, and parts of Northwest Austin. New businesses are on their way and the residential growth that has been experienced over the past few years is phenomenal. The long-term water supply is now secure for the city’s residents and a newly expanded wastewater treatment plant is on-line. The city continues to expand its roadway network to assist the residents of Leander in traveling into the Austin area.”[2]
