fruit

The answer is YES!! I know no one wants to hear this, especially during the summertime when fruit is at it’s best, but it has to be said. The reason you’re not losing weight could be because you’re overeating too much fruit. While fruit is full of vitamin C and antioxidants, it’s also packed full of fructose which is that bad sugar that our bodies can’t digest. The recommended serving size of fruit each day is about 1/2 cup which is the size of the palm of your hand. Here are some signs that you may be eating too much fruit.

You’re Frequently Bloated

Fruit is a classic trigger for bloating and here’s why. Fruit is rich in a type of sugar called fructose. Unfortunately, many of us are not well equipped to digest and absorb large amounts of fructose. Researchers believe up to 40% of people suffer from a condition called fructose malabsorption in which fructose is inefficiently absorbed across the small intestine. So instead of nourishing us, sometimes fruit sits in the gut and ferments with the help of bacteria. And the result of those bacteria feasting on fructose is a lot of gas and bloating that makes us feel pretty icky.

You Can’t Lose Weight

I agree that fruit is a healthier alternative to many desserts and junk foods, but if fruit is a staple item at every meal and snack, you may simply be eating too many carbohydrates to allow your body to lose weight. In brief, any time we eat carbohydrates our blood sugar goes up. That triggers our body to release insulin to lower the blood sugar. How does it do that? By converting it to fat for storage!

You Always Crave Sugar

Not only does eating fruit spike your blood sugar, as explained above, it also doesn’t sustain it for very long. If you have fruit by itself as a snack, you might notice that you’re satisfied for 30 minutes or so, but soon after your tummy starts growling. That’s because fruit doesn’t come packaged with much protein or fat to keep us sated. Yes, it has fiber, which helps a bit, but it’s not enough to prevent a crash in blood sugar after eating fruit.

What happens when our blood sugar tanks? We get hungry and we get cravings.

Now I love fruit as much as the next person and I’m not saying cut it out completely, but just be mindful of how much you’re eating if you’re not seeing the results you want! Try to stick to the recommended two servings a day and you’ll soon be on the way to a healthier you!

I always go to bed with the best intentions to wake up early, enjoy the morning, and fuel my body with a satisfying breakfast, but things don’t always work out that way — did I mention I’m not much of a morning person? Luckily, I’ve found a recipe that requires about 30 seconds of preparation the night before and ensures that I get to fulfill at least one of these morning goals every day. Meet the easiest breakfast of all time: overnight oats. It does not get any better than mixing a few ingredients together before bed and grabbing a spoon when you’re ready to eat a delicious breakfast.

High in protein and fiber, this whole-grain recipe will keep hunger at bay all morning long. Even better, this recipe supports healthy digestion and can even help you beat belly bloat. I’ve toyed around with a number of iterations of the basic recipe with slight changes, but this combination of ingredients including chia seeds and slivered almonds has become my go-to mix. Try it out for yourself tonight.

overnight oats

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 tablespoons slivered almonds
1/2 tablespoon maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix all the ingredients together in a glass jar. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate overnight.
  2. The next morning, remove from the fridge, top off with your favorite fresh fruit, and enjoy!

Review:

“Great Job Mrs. Kathy. I just closed on a house my wife and i had built from the ground up. It was very grueling process and she was there ever step of the way. She helped us find a location pick the type of house and even went with us to the design center to help pick out everything. She was very helpful especially since it was our first rodeo. I recommend her if your looking for a professional real estate agent with many years of experience. My wife and I love our new home and we are thankful for her in helping us into our dream home.”

I recently received a picture from a friend of mine of an old man riding around Austin on a bike wearing nothing but his underwear! It was a funny sight to see to say the least and it got me thinking about Austin’s slogan “Keep Austin Weird”. Austin is known for preserving its quirkiness and the people that live here are very proud of the culture; some even embody it. One thing I especially love about Austin is the food! There’s so many “weird” and unique places to eat here and I wanted to share some of them here that you should definitely try! They may sound a little weird but we wouldn’t be doing our Austinite duty if we didn’t do our part in keeping Austin weird! Check out these unique dishes when you get the chance, you won’t be disappointed!

Good Afternoon Friends and Family!! It’s almost Friday hooray!

I thought I would share with you all today a fun and healthy recipe that I came across. It’s a unique twist on one of my favorite side dishes, mashed potatoes. It has the same great look and taste of mashed potatoes but with a healthy twist, you substitute potatoes for cauliflower. It’s an excellent way to fool your children into trying new vegetables and it tastes great too!

Cauliflower Mashed “Potatoes”

INGREDIENTS:

1 head of cauliflower
3 tablespoons milk
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons light sour cream
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
freshly ground black pepper
snipped chives

DIRECTIONS:

1. Separate the cauliflower into florets and chop the core finely.

2. Bring about 1 cup of water to a simmer in a pot, then add the cauliflower. Cover and turn the heat to medium. Cook the cauliflower for 12-15 minutes or until very tender.

3. Drain and discard all of the water (the drier the cauliflower is, the better) and add the milk, butter, sour cream, salt and pepper and mash with a masher until it looks like “mashed potatoes.” Top with chives.

Despite the Cold and Wet weather for a Friday, I hope you all Enjoy the day!!
Have a Wonderful Weekend Friends!!

Happy Friday

I know We all fall victim to not spending enough time with Family or Friends. So, here I’ve gathered a Few tips to Help You, and Myself with getting better with Time!

The modern age may demand your attention through handheld devices and smartphones, but your family needs your attention from, well, You. Don’t let your phone compete for family time and instead, exercise these simple, practical and very human tips to reconnect:

Turn off your phone. Compartmentalize your life to focus your attention on what you’re doing and enjoying at that moment. If it’s work time, then enjoy working. If it’s family time, then enjoy the family!

Eat dinner together. Dinnertime is a perfect way to share your successes with each other, regroup or just catch up. Make sure to ask kids specific questions about their day. And keep the TV off.

Read with your kids. Reading not only helps you connect with your kids, but also helps build their vocabulary, increase their curiosity about life, and gets them interested in reading. They will cherish it forever.

Attend kids’ concerts and games. Kids want to see your face in the crowd. You can share their wins and help them understand their losses. These shared experiences make for great conversations over many family dinners to come.

Exercise together. Shooting some hoops, taking a walk, or just throwing or kicking a ball together while you small talk will be great for your family relationships.

Do the morning or afternoon school run. This gives you a chance to encourage your kids to have a great day, ask them how their day went, and show how proud you are of them.

Don’t forget date night! Kids are important, but so is your partner. Going out for a special night at least once a week—just the two of you—is important for reconnecting. It also shows your kids how important you are to each other.
